Welcome to the tenth edition

of the Rixton-with-Glazebrook’s ‘in the know’ newsletter. Several groups have reported that new members have joined them having read about their facility in the newsletter. Your feedback is always appreciated as this helps us to monitor the effectiveness of the publication. If you wish to pass on your thoughts or comments you can send these to: mandy@hamiltondavies.org.uk or phone 0161 222 4003. If there are any local services or facilities that are not covered in this publication, please pass on contact details and I will make sure they receive an information form for the next edition.

With added input from yourselves a few more pages have been added. I have included contents and page numbers below for ease of reference. Thanks once again to our band of local volunteers who kindly help to distribute the newsletter. News, events and permitted images will also be posted on www.hollinsgreen.net.

New to our area is the ‘Clean up Day’ organised and managed by Golden Gates Housing as part of a schedule of environment awareness days in Warrington to help create a tidier environment. This is a community action event and is available to all residents who wish to dispose of any larger household rubbish. On Wednesday 21st April 2 skips will be located in front of bungalows 1-9 on the corner of Birch Road and Sycamore Crescent between 8.00am and 4.00pm. Any household items can be tipped and the skips will be checked periodically and replaced if full. Two environmental caretakers will be on hand to provide help if needed. Leaflets will be posted to all Golden Gates housing at least 3 days prior to the event. If you need any further information you can contact Michael Claffey, Neighbourhood Housing Officer, on 0800 252627.

John and Dave have completed a third village walk. Aptly named Daffodil Walk this 1-1½ hour route is particularly pleasant during the Spring season when lanes and green areas are awash with daffodils, crocus, bluebells and snowdrops. You can download the walk from www.hollinsgreen.net or pick it up from Glazebrook Post Office, libraries in Culcheth, Irlam and Cadishead, Rixton Claypits visitors centre and the Black Swan Pub.

NEW

The Black Swan pub update

“Work started in January on the much needed major refit. The new washrooms, beer cellar and part of the pub commenced, whilst the pub remained open. We then had to shut until March 12th so the public areas, bar and behind the scenes could be refurbished. The outdoor sheltered area is near completion and better access and facilities for disabled and babies is underway. The refit is on target for completion and on reopening we would like to provide more services to the local area and encourage more community involvement. We have been asking our customers what they would like to see in our pub, now we are a free house, and have taken on board quite a few new ideas whilst trying to retain what we love about the pub. Whilst closed the chefs are working up a new menu and there will be a new wine list and both cask ales and keg beers in our new cellars. We will be opening earlier and serving teas and coffee and offering wireless internet access. We look forward to seeing you in early March.”

Liz and Mike

By now most residents and regular users of Glazebrook Lane will have noticed the 2 new solar powered Traffic Activated speed warning signs on Glazebrook Lane at each end of the village. These have been achieved through partnership working by local resident Pete Higson, Warrington Borough Council and funding from a local Trust Fund. Pete says “ I first broached the idea at a local Community Action Meeting nearly 9 months ago. Following this I then spent several months researching appropriate signage and costs and liaising with WBC, who conducted a road safety survey. It was concluded that the signs would be appropriate and that if funding could be found to purchase the signs the council would erect them. I then put the proposed project forward to the Hamilton Davies Trust and was awarded funding. Since installation the signs have been monitored by the local police and WBC road safety officer who have agreed that these are effective in reminding road users that they are in a 30mph zone and in slowing traffic down, thus helping make it a safer place for all residents. I am sure other areas in our community would benefit from similar signs -if there are any organisations or businesses that would like to provide funding, either singly or jointly for such, I would be happy for them to get in touch” Pete can be contacted on 0161 775 2802.

Local residents answered the call for help when asked to plant bulbs around the village. Thank you to all 27 volunteers, who gave their time during a wet autumn weekend and didn’t complain when going home with blisters and back ache! We can all look forward to appreciating the new colourful display this spring when the villages will be blooming with daffodils and crocuses down lanes, on green areas and on the village greens in Glazebrook and Hollins Green.

MESSAGE FROM YOUR LOCAL PARISH COUNCILLOR CHAIR

MAUREEN BANNER

“ Our Civic Sunday is rich in history and tradition and represents a key event in the annual cycle of a Parish Chair’s year. The service brings together the elected representatives of the Parish, The Mayor, Borough Councillors, the Police and other Parish Chairs, church representatives and most importantly the community. The service in January seemed to me to be very special this year. We had a very full church, the flowers added a beautiful splash of colour and the Reverand Pat Gray captured all our attention with the imagination and power of her sermon. All appeared to enjoy the hymns selected and I believe we all left the church feeling spiritually uplifted. Our Parish has achieved a reputation amongst the Parish Chairs for the food we serve. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful team who manage to serve 75 people with a traditional hot English breakfast - impressing all who attend as we are the only Parish in Warrington serving hot food at such an event. This year was memorable for me, having had the privelege of being Chair for 5 years. I shall be welcoming and supporting a new Chair in May.”

The Parish Council vacancy for a new Parish Councillor has now been filled by Rita Westbury.
